Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Project: Consultative and Capacity Building Workshop in Myanmar

Connecting the upper reaches in the GMS

Nay Pyi Daw (Myanmar), 6 September 2016: A Multi-Stakeholder Interactive Workshop on Tools for Natural Resources Management, under the South-South Capacity Building for Ecosystem Management in the GMS was held at the Environmental Conservation Department, Nay Pyi Daw, Myanmar.

Considering the vast land area and diverse ecosystem types of the country, the workshop provided an opportune platform for the participants to discuss and learn different tools for natural resources management with case studies representing 5 (out of totally 7) ecosystem types of the country. These are: Hkakabo Razi (Montane Ecosystem), Popa (Dry Zone/Agricultural Ecosystem), Ayeyarwady (Riverine Ecosystem), Lampi (Coastal/Marine Ecosystem), and Inle (Freshwater Lake Ecosystem). Through discussions and knowledge exchange with other representatives, the workshop served as a valuable opportunity for participants to enhance capacity and awareness on the importance of ecosystem approach and services.

Results of this workshop will be assessed by the UNEP-IEMP team on the needs, gaps and the readiness of Myanmar on capacity in ecosystem management. It will further provide input to build a framework for regional cooperation on capacity building on ecosystem management in the GMS.

The workshop, funded by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), was attended by representatives from various governrmental agencies, universities, international conservation organisations, national NGOs and minority groups.

Myanmar is the last participating country where the GMS team has organized the consultative and capacity building workshop. Prior to this, the workshops have been convened successfully in Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Viet Nam and China this year.
