During 19-22 October 2020, UNEP-IEMP’s research team on “Assessment and Adaptive Management of Habitats for Siberian Cranes in the Yellow River Delta” visited the Shandong Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve, located in the northeastern coast of Dongying City, Shandong Province.

According to the research objectives, the investigation in the field consisted of two major activities. Firstly, the team visited the wetland restoration area, feeding grounds on farmland, riverside beach, and other habitats of White crane at the three management stations of the Reserve (Dabunliu, Huanghekou, and the twelve) and investigated the current situation of land use and vegetation cover, so as to carry out field verification for remote sensing image interpretation. Secondly, the team visited eight administrative villages of Huanghekou Town, a main town located in the Reserve, and conducted a questionnaire survey on villagers’ livelihood activities and bird protection behaviors. After the survey in these villages, the research team also visited the Dongying Modern Agricultural Ecological Park of Charoen Pokphand Group to understand the impact of birds’ activities on crop planting and production.

The above-mentioned field investigation activities were strongly supported by the Foreign Affairs Office of Dongying Municipal People’s Government, the Management Committee of Shandong Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve, the Management Center of Dongying Modern Agriculture Demonstration Zone, and the People’s Government of Huanghekou Town, Kenli District of Dongying.
